For what punk is, I enjoy this.
:)

GraniteOverworld responds:

Heh, I only labeled it as punk cause basically none of the other tags describe this properly. Glad yuh like it ^_^

This tune is very interesting, especially when you first hear the chord progression in the beginning.
The swelling effect (overall) used for the build up was quite fitting and just tangible enough.

I will avert my ears from (what I feel to be) occasional clutter given that you're working with 8/16 bit but I find the crash sound (drums - cymbal) to be a bit flawed.

All in all a nice piece :)

Are you using the EWQLSO package? Ahh... nevermind.

-------------------------------

I very much liked your layout. This song would be somewhat fitting to the Minecraft scenario. There is nothing wrong with the piece, really, but I think the render could have been a bit cleaner. There seems to be some low-end clutter on parts (about the 2 minute mark) that creates a slight bass-peak which overloads the output slightly, creating faint clicks.

Neon-Bard responds:

Yep EWQLSO all the way.

I'll have to go back and check out that part around the 2 minute mark. I can hear exactly what you're talking about, I'm just a little confused as to what I could have done to make that clutter. Perhaps the lower notes I used...not quite sure, but I'll find it!

Thanks for picking up on that Fanopeion, it's most appreciated! :)

Very nice.

The only thing that bothered me (this is nitpicking on my part) is that when you introduced the Spiccato (violin? or was it cello?) is that it felt 10% too loud, but after about 3-4 bars it blends perfectly. As I said, nitpicking :)

First impression of this song is pretty nice.

The development of the song advances quite comfortably for the first two minutes, then it slows down considerably. I really can't get it out of my mind that the same chord progression is clearly heard throughout the piece and it makes me feel like there is a chapter missing.

SiegWin responds:

Sorry I've been trying to work out this problem for a while
my melodies tend to repeat too much
thanks for the insight though

I'd like to pride myself in thinking that I've correctly spotted the VST package you're using. Nexus? Is that correct? Ahaha, nevermind.

I think that the melody you're using is just too uneventful to be used as a main (on its own) during the first 2 minutes, and again to the end after the small break. The progression of the song is also quite confusing. The buildup is done in such small steps of variety that the song looses any potential definitive makeup. The loss of individuality within the song structure is also accomplished somewhat by the loss of low-range rhythmic properties that could be established, for example, with a more characteristic bass-line.
In essence, the song lacks character.

I hope you find this review to be fair :)

Vasek responds:

Thanks for opinion, i realized same thing. I'm doing my best on the way of changing it and making my songs more complex. Step by step i'm also trying to stimulate my music imagination.
Anyway, thanks for review, it's very helpful!

I will be honest. I didn't really like it. But, since I'm being harsh I think it's proper that I give a thorough explanation.

The first thing you will have to work on is your voice. You have to convey more confidence and try to steady yourself. Your voice is flailing about too much. You could power through by practicing hard. It is very important to study breathing techniques so that you can assert the correct force of the diaphragm for the correct amount of time. It is never pretty to hear someone who hangs on notes by reserving himself or even being out of breath. Another thing that is affecting your tone heavily, is your nose. Try to exhale from the back of your throat to create a healthy vibrato that is void of going through or brushing too heavily on your nose cavity.

The audio quality is poor, so the next thing is recording equipment. I'm not talking about getting the most expensive but a decent mid-range kit can always present a decent sound. A simple condenser microphone can go a long way, both for acoustic instruments, drums and your voice. The next thing would be getting yourself a simple audio interface. I myself am using a 120$ audio interface that has lasted me for 4 years and is still going. It's great for line-ins such as Bass, Electric Guitar, Keyboards and of course the XLR-in microphone.

Last but not least is song structure. We don't always want to adhere to the mainstream or the "system" but we shouldn't be boring either. The structure and/or tone of the composition doesn't really change. It's damn repetitive to be honest. You trap your instruments a little too much. It's not unlike writing a book. If you're able to give your instruments a unique character but still retaining a tandem between them, you've done the job :)

I don't enjoy shitting all over people or telling them that they've not done too well... I hope that the pointers I have given, however harsh they may be, help you.
Don't give up on music just yet. Grow in it :-)

Jackssauro responds:

I appreciate your honesty, I can only say that I try.
I am not american, and here (where I live) everything is really expensive. A guitar costs like $1000. Other recording stuff (that have a good quality) costs something like $600. Because everything comes from America. Something that costs $25 there costs more like $75 around here and I don't have money. I don't know if you heard my other songs, so I ask you to go and do this to see if you keep this opinion. About my voice, I don't know what to do. But anyway I won't give up because music is my life.

Very fitting for its genre (video game music).

The SNES feeling is quite palpable throughout the piece. I think though that the buildup around the 2nd minute mark should have been a little bolder when exploring the lead possibilites, making a tad bigger impact instead of dying out in about 4 or 8 bars (depends on your counting methods). I'm not too sure about the fade-out ending too.

However, this is just nitpicking.

A fine piece :)

Blackmajiick responds:

Thanks :D
I completely agree with all your nitpicks. Unfortunately I couldn't add much more to the buildup there, as the submission is supposed be between 2 and 3 minutes.
I might go back and make an actual ending though. That was mostly me being lazy. This piece isn't done yet, and I posted it to get some feedback before I use it as my contest submission

Technical pointers
------------------------
1st pointer:
Though the native packages included within FL Studio are great I recommend you get to know some VST's. I urge you to read the manual pages on how to import VST's or searching for and adding VST plugins.

2nd Pointer:
Familiarize yourself with the piano roll and the tools that come with it. Again, reading or looking at youtube tutorials is beneficial.

3rd pointer:
Familiarize yourself with the playlist feature. How does that feature help you with the composition?

4th pointer:
Equalization. Learn to locate peaks through the Graphic EQ. You could also consider using the Fruity limiter.

5th pointer:
Experiment with the basic functions such as panning, volume controls, etc.

6th pointer:
Familiarize yourself with the mixer. Figure out how to add reverb, how to add a filter. Experiment with phasers, choruses and other effects. Experiment with creating automation clips (they go in the playlist feature).

7th pointer:
Experiment with everything. Tinker. Fiddle.
------------------------

Musical Pointers:

Brainstorm. Be yourself. Question everything and account for everything.
Ask yourself:
Is it too repetitive? Do the instruments match? Would it do good to add another instrument? Should I reverb this? Do I need more bass? Do I need more treble? Is everything working harmoniously? Do I want everything to work harmoniously? Should I make a transition? Is this a good idea? Is this original work? How do I make the melodies mine? How do I make other melodies mine? Do I need to speed things up? Do I need to slow things down? What should play the lead melody? What should be kept in the background? Do I need to pan things?

And always remember. If you sincerely try you are on the right track.
------------------------

I hope this brief collection of pointers helps :)

I think you're overdoing it a bit too much on the double kicker . When the 5-part (duh dududu duhn) shred initiates I think it would've made the drums stand more out by syncing the bass-drums to that shred, instead of creating that drone.

Otherwise - nice :)

Lich responds:

I'll keep that in mind for when I release the full version later on :)

I wish I were productive
